Catena Zapata

The 2006 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon presents a dark purple color with garnet tones. The nose offers intense aromas of ripe black currant fruit with layers of eastern spice, cedar, and a touch of fresh herbs. The mouthfeel is full and rich with layers of cassis flavors and notes of roasted espresso and graphite. The finish is bright and fresh with finely grained tannins.

Wine Advocate

The red wines start with the purple-colored 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged for 14 months in 80% French oak, 30% new, and 20% new American oak. It exhibits an enticing perfume of wood smoke, cedar, tobacco, black currant, and blackberry. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied with ample spicy black fruits, integrated tannins, complex flavors, and a lengthy finish. Give it 1-2 years to round out and drink it from 2010 to 2020. It is an outstanding Cabernet value.

Score: 90. —Jay Miller, December 2008.

Wine Enthusiast

Big and burly, with a semi- syrupy nose that brings berry jam, molasses, shoe polish and crusty, baked berry aromas. But don’t dismiss this Cab as overripe and over the top; it is complete and balanced, with good acidity pushing black fruit, chocolate, clove and herb flavors to their maximum expression. And it dials it in on the finish, where cola and coffee notes are just right. Drink now through 2010.

Score: 89. —Michael Schachner, August 01, 2009.

Wine Spectator

Juicy, with a bright edge to the plum, cherry and licorice notes. The streamlined finish lets a mocha note linger. Drink now.

Score: 87. —James Suckling, December 31, 2008.
