Catena Zapata

The 2002 Nicolás Catena Zapata presents a dark, opaque violet color. The nose is packed full of ripe black berry fruit aromas, with layers of eucalyptus, black pepper, and mineral notes. The mouthfeel is full, yet supple, with a soft, generous texture. On the palate, the wine offers rich, concentrated flavors of cassis and black currant fruit interwoven with notes of cigar box, sweet spice and vanilla. The finish is long and lingering, with well structured tannins and racy acidity.

Wine Spectator

An impressive, modern-style wine, with well-defined layers of loam, raspberry, black currant, tobacco, mineral and grilled herb. Powerful, but long and elegant, with the toast content to sit in the background. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Drink now through 2011.

Score: 93. —James Molesworth, November 30, 2006.

Wine Enthusiast

When this powerhouse icon red was introduced with the ’97 vintage it was heavily weighted to Cabernet Sauvignon. But now Malbec accounts for 32% of the blend. The result in this excellent year is a forward wine with laser-beam acidity framing bright blueberry and cassis flavors. It has perfect structure and avoids any of the softness and heaviness that sometimes plague New World super reds.

Score: 92. —Michael Schachner, November 01, 2006.
