FX Pichler

This is one of the steepest and most austere primitive-rock sites encountered in Loiben. The Loibner Berg, Wachau’s largest coherent single vineyard, is fully exposed to the south and accordingly warm. The wines derived from this site are shaped by the unique composition of this first-class soil, which imparts longevity to them. Here, opulent, intense and yet subtle wines develop – Riesling showing a fruity texture (peach, apricot) and Grüner Veltliner being full-bodied with underlying minerality, even slightly smoky and tobaccoy notes.

Wine Advocate

The Pichlers’ 2007 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibnerberg displays a striking, bitter-sweet floral component, musk melon and lychee aromas, and a stony and savory, saline mineral depth. These elements are allied on the palate to a cool, juicy musk melon, sweet pea, mint, and honeydew melange. While ripe and textually lush, this finishes with a lovely sense of buoyancy along with the aforementioned mineral savor. It should keep well for a decade.

Score: 92. —David Schildknecht, February 2009.

Wine Spectator

Rich and ripe, with focused flavors of pear, peach, apricot and Fuji apple. The long, luscious finish is filled with creamy and spicy notes. Drink now through 2014.

Score: 91. —Kim Marcus, December 15, 2008.
