FX Pichler

This is one of the steepest and most austere primitive-rock sites encountered in Loiben. The Loibner Berg, Wachau’s largest coherent single vineyard, is fully exposed to the south and accordingly warm. The wines derived from this site are shaped by the unique composition of this first-class soil, which imparts longevity to them. Here, opulent, intense and yet subtle wines develop – Riesling showing a fruity texture (peach, apricot).

Wine Spectator

Very rich and powerful, with an intensely spicy aroma and flavors of ripe peach, apricot, pear, vanilla and butter cream. Notes of ruby grapefruit chime in as well and turn quite supple on the long, focused and mineral-filled finish. Drink now through 2020. 625 cases made.

Score: 94. —Kim Marcus, 2008.

Wine Enthusiast

The fruit is superripe and there is generous weight and power. But with its supercharged acidity, the wine also has great balance and freshness, giving no hint of the alcohol, leaving crispness as an antidote to the impressive richness.

Score: 93. —Roger Voss, May 01, 2008.

Wine Advocate

The Pichler’s 2006 Riesling Smaragd Loibnerberg – like its Gruner Veltliner counterpart – displays imposing richness, but also slight heat. Oily-textured and opulent on the palate, this finishes full and strong, with peach, and black licorice predominating. It does not offer the last word in refinement, and I would be inclined to enjoy it over the next 4-6 years, but this is certainly one big mouthful of wine.

Score: 91. —David Schildknecht, June 2008.
