Josef Leitz

This is a luminous Riesling Ideal; serenely glowing; apple flesh and skin, a little fibrous sweet-leesy texture anchors what might have been too “fruity”; talc aromas, and a subtle tamped-down minerality until the finish, which is stony, silky and texturous. Notwithstanding the Grand Crus coming up, this “Magda” (Leitz’s own term for the tongue-twister) gives as much sensual pleasure as great Riesling can.

Wine Advocate

It would he hard to argue that German Riesling is no longer a good value when you can still buy a Spatlese from one of the country’s top vintners and most-celebrated regions for under $25, as is the case with Leitz’s 2007 Rudesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spatlese. As usual, this site offers a veritable fruit fest, here with pineapple, pear and cherry taking the lead. Polished in feel and with subtly oily slickness, this Riesling manages to express near-over-ripeness and display considerable sweetness while remaining delicate. While less dynamic, nuanced, or mineral than its Drachenstein or Klosterlay counterparts, this will give enormous pleasure anytime over the next 5-7 years.

Score: 89. —David Schildknecht, August 2008.
