Austria's extremely long viticultural history began at least 4000 years ago as seen in the archaelogical evidence of vineyards in the Treisental region. The Roman Empire's dissolution of a ban on grape-growing north of the Alps brought new life to the region with wide-ranging Gruner Veltliner and Welschriesling plantings.
The wine regions of Austria almost entirely located along the eastern border near the Danube River. In modern times, Gruner Veltliner and Riesling are mostly responsible for the dry whites, Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt for red, while Welschriesling is grown for the sweet wines of Neusiedlerslee.
