The history of wine may have its roots in Ancient Phoenicia and Greece, but Italy's Roman Empire may be more responsible for the spread of viticulture than any other factor. As the Empire spread, the Legions brought the vine with them.
There is no hope of covering the range and breadth of wine available from Italy in this short description. Italy's 20 wine regions closely match the country's 20 political regions. However, there are 333 regulated (DOC and DOCG) regions and 150 "regional wine" areas within these 20 departments. There are 350 official wine grape varieties, plus another 500 unofficial varieties available to the Italian wine maker. Some of the more famous grapes include Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and Montepulciano for red; Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Pinot Grigio for white; Moscato for sweet.
