South Africa's wine history dates well back into the 17th century. With the expansion of the European colonies across the Africa and Southeast Asia throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, South Africa became the perfect holdover point for ships passing the Cape of Good Hope. A permanent colony was formed by the Dutch at Cape Town and, of course, vines for wine were planted both to sustain the local population and to ward off scurvy in the crews of trade vessels.
This winery, Constantia, became a touchstone for quality as viticulture spread across South Africa. Their dessert wine became (and remains) one of the most revered in the world. Now over a dozen significant regions are known for producing excellent quality wines of world-class distinction.
